Ranais, "the Funereal World," is the primary inhabited world found within an unknown crystal sphere on the Prime Material plane.[1] The world was subject to some form of calamity centuries ago. It was often used as a quick way to travel between Crux and Sigil: the portals were only about 15 miles apart, through the ruins of a once-great city.

The sun is tiny and white, providing little in the way of warmth or illumination. As a result, even during daytime, the effect is that of constant night.

The population revered death in many forms (although they were unconnected to the Heralds of Dust), including Orcus. When the city of Moil turned away from Orcus, he cast it into a demiplane, and the rest of the world was plunged into chaos. Those who could, escaped to other planes, the rest perishing, haunting the world as a form of spirit called the Lovelost.

When Orcus returned as Tenebrous, he commanded his servants, the visages, use the ruins of Ranais as their base of operations, specifically the ruins of a Temple of Orcus.[2]

Personalities[]

Centuries ago, refugees from Ranais fled to the planes. Many settled into the town of Crux on Yggdrasil, while others settled in their own neighborhood in Sigil, which they call Goatswood. It was originally in the Lower Ward, but as ward boundaries shifted, Goatswood is now considered part of the Hive Ward.[3]

Portals[]

The following portals are known to link to Ranais:

  • From High Point in Crux to Ranais. The portal was always open, resembling a color pool.[4][5] The portal closed following the return of Orcus, cutting Crux off from both their ancestral homeworld and also Sigil.[6]
  • A set of double-doors on a stable in the Market Ward to Ranais.[5]
  • To the fortress of Tcian Sumere in the Negative Energy plane from the Temple of Orcus. The portal (and the whole temple) vanished once Orcus returned.[6]

Gods[]

The people of Ranais venerated many gods of death, including (but not limited to) Orcus. Each major city had their own patron god.
