Deep History[]

The multiverse was swirling chaos. Forms coalesced, creating the planes and the first powers.

Two of the powers championing the forces Law were the Twin Serpents: Jazirian, a winged and feathered serpent dedicated to Good, and Ahriman, a scaled serpent dedicated to evil. The ring formed by two biting each others' tails demarcated a new plane called the Outlands, and other planes fell in around it, forming the Great Ring of the Outer Planes. This action also enshrined the Unity of Rings as a fundamental multiversal law.[1]

In honor of the triple aspects of Law, Good, and Evil, the Serpents established the Rule of Three. The Serpents attempted to define a center for the multiverse. Despite the advantage of the Outlands, Jazirian pushed for Mount Celestia, while Ahriman pushed for the inverted mountain of Baator.

The two tore themselves apart in their disagreement, with both fleeing to their respective preferred planes. Jazirian bled from her tail, the tip torn off. Wherever drops landed, a couatl was born. Wingless Ahriman fell to the deepest pit of Baator, and wherever he bled, a devil arose. The lack of a defined center paradoxically gave rise to the third multiversal law, the Center of All.

Weakened in their struggle, other powers usurped them, founding pantheons and spreading their influence across the planes.[2]

Ahriman rebranded himself as Asmodeus, lord of Nessus, a near-power at best, although he secretly remained a Greater Power.[3]
