The Heralds of Dust (previously Dustmen) are a faction who believe that the whole multiverse is a sort of purgatory: we're all already dead, although most of us don't realize it. Some -- undead like ghosts or liches or vampires -- are more dead than others, but we're all still stuck here until we can embrace True Death.

History[]

In the wake of the Faction War in 130 YFHR, most Dustmen shrugged, threw off their faction regalia, and kept doing what they were doing before, as the Mortuary Guild. "Dustman" becomes Sigilian slang for someone who collects dead bodies.

Philosophy[]

We're all dead, some more so than others. We explore our state with patience, purge our passion, and ascend towards the purity of True Death.

Role[]

The Heralds, as might be expected, run the city's Mortuary, where they come into contact with the dead from all over the city, and ferry them off through one of the city's many portals for disposal. Whether that means burial in Elysium or cremation in the Elemental Plane of Fire.

Membership[]

Factotums

Factotums and higher ranks within the Heralds of Dust are known as Initiates. Factotums are divided into Initiates of the Fifth Circle and Initiates of the Fourth Circle. In order for a namer to become an Initiate, they must attend their own funeral, making peace with family and friends, and divesting themselves of their worldly possessions.

Known Factotums:

  • Initiate of the Fourth Circle Emoric[1]
Factors

Factors (and the factol are Initiates of the First Circle; Factotums typically get promoted directly from the Fourth to First Circle. Rumour has it that the missing Third and Second Circles are composed of lesser and greater free-willed undead, respectively.

Background Information[]

  • The "Dustmen" name was likely changed to "Heralds of Dust" in 5th Edition because it was the only formal faction name (not including nicknames like Godsmen, Chaosmen, etc) which was gendered.
