The Faction War was an event that occurred in 130 YFHR where Duke Rowan Darkwood, Factol of the Fated, made a play to take over Sigil from the Lady of Pain.

The War[]

The war involved all 15 factions going to war with each other. They split up into roughly three fronts:

The following Factols end up Mazed:

The following Factols meet other fates:

  • Factol Lhar of the Bleak Cabal succumbed to the Grim Retreat before the War broke out and appointed Sruce as his successor.
  • Factol Hashkar of the Fraternity of Order is murdered by a criminal released from the Prison.
  • Factol Sarin of the Harmonium is murdered by an Anarchist assassin just before the war breaks out.
  • Factol Alisohn Nilesia is sold by her new husband, Darkwood, as a slave to the fiends of the lower planes.
  • Factol Rhys senses what's going to happen, and leaves for Elysium before trouble breaks out. She orders her faction to keep out of "whatever's going to happen."

Rather than calm things down, the disappearance of their factols escalates tensions.

Act I: Guarding Rr'ka[]

Act II: The Battle at the Armory[]

Act III: The Eschaton[]

Act IV: Darkstorm[]

Just as everything seems to be calming down, Ely Cromlich lets in a force of fiends.

The Lady of Pain does something she's never done in all of recorded history: she closes all portals in Sigil.

Act V: Magic Uncaged[]

Act VI: The Unity of Rings[]

Aftermath[]

Two days after all parties declare a truce, the Lady of Pain reopens all portals. The next day, she appears before the new leaders of each faction, with a dabus in tow, to make a pronouncement:

This city tolerates your fraction no longer. Abandon it or die.

Cagers argue the exact meaning -- is "it" the city, or the faction? Is the exile forever? Can you be a member of a faction with a headquarters outside the city? -- but ultimately the factions know their time is at an end.

Abandon Your Faction: Some factions remain in Sigil, but disband, at least for now.

Abandon The City: Some factions move their main power-base outside the city. Individual members can remain, however.

Abandon Your (Current) Faction, And The City: The remaining handful of factions changed form:

  • On their way out, the Believers of the Source and Sign of One found enough in common, and merged to form the Mind's Eye, led by Ombidias.
  • The Mercykillers split back into their two original factions:
    • The Sodkillers (with no real leader) remained in Sigil, although they call themselves the Minder's Guild until such a time as factions are allowed to operated again.
    • The Sons of Mercy (led by Arwyl Swan's Son) also aren't a faction (for now), but maintain the Prison. They try to patrol the streets, but have no legal jurisdiction.
