Dungeon was one of several official magazines published to support Dungeons & Dragons, typically paired with Dragon magazine. Dungeon released various adventure material, while Dragon released new characters, classes, races, lore, and other supplemental material, as well as rule clarifications, and other news and reviews from other companies in the RPG industry.

Dungeon launched ten years after Dragon, in 1986, and published bimonthly until May 2003 (issue #97), when it went monthly. It then ran until September 2007 when it printed its final issue, #150. The magazine was resumed from that point as an online-only magazine, until it too came to an end with issue #221 in 2013.

A digital successor, Dragon+, was launched in 2015, but its numbering was restarted at #1.

A similar magazine, Polyhedron, was provided as part of the membership of the Role-Playing Game Association. While Dungeon was published in odd months (January, March, May, July, September, November), Polyhedron was released in even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October, December). From issue 90 (January 2002) to issue 111 (June 2004), Polyhedron's content was merged into Dungeon.
