The Bridge That Spans Worlds is a massive mithril and adamantite suspension bridge located in Sigil. It was constructed centuries ago, before the Great Upheaval, by a now-defunct faction called the Forgesmiths.

Despite the fanciful name, it only spans the Ditch, with one side in the Lower Ward and the other in the Hive Ward. However, the structure of the bridge does form part of the structure of the Seafarer's Arch, a "multiportal" leading to a number of different locations around the planes, and a key aspect of Sigil's planar trade. Fraternity of Order records are incomplete, with Guvners unsure if the Bridge was constructed specifically to enable the manifestation of the portal, or the portal's appearance there was coincidental, but regardless, the Bridge's name comes from the existence of its portal.

The bridge's stark beauty had the Society of Sensation name it one of the seven Wonders of the Multiverse.

Background Information[]

  • The Bridge and portal having different names likely leads to some confusion among Cagers and planar travelers alike, similar to how "Big Ben" (officially "the Great Bell of the Great Clock of Westminster") is technically the bell, and not the clock tower in which it is housed (Elizabeth Tower).
  • Although Lazz's art depicts an arch bridge, the bridge is described as a suspension bridge, where the traversable surface is suspended from above via cables. The most well-known example of a suspension bridge is probably the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. However, given that the Ditch is only 50 feet/15 meters across, an arch bridge is probably a more reasonable design. Suspension bridges are better suited to longer spans.
