Athas is the primary inhabited world found within an unknown crystal sphere on the Prime Material plane.[1]
Fiends love the magics of defilers and hate the magics of preservers, and vice versa in the upper planes. The elemental clerics are often considered ignorant to the realities of the multiverse, particularly by those who live in the outer planes among the domains of the gods.
Personalities[]
The following planar personalities came from Athas:
Jemorille the Exile claimed to have counseled the halfling Rajaat in the secrets of magic.[4]
A community of primes from Athas have created their own neighborhood in the Hive Ward of Sigil, which they call New Tyr.[5]
Portals[]
Portals to Athas are rare in the extreme, and spells that allow interplanar travel fail more than half the time. The crystal sphere is reinforced by a feature called "the Gray," rendering the crystal sphere impervious to physical entry, and entirely replacing the Border Ethereal.
Athasians refer to a number of the Paraemelemental planes by different names, such as the plane of Sun or Rain.
The following portals are known to link to Athas:
- From the Astral Plane to Athas. The githyanki attempted to reopen this permanent portal, but were thwarted by Athasian natives.[1]
- The Obsidian Gate of Tor Galen: From Athas to the Quasi-Elemental Plane of Ash
- From the Sea of Silt to the Quasi-Elemental Plane of Dust
- The Seafarer's Arch in the Ditch links to the Silt Sea[6]
Gods[]
Athas has no gods. While many worlds have a battle between the primordials and gods, in the case of Athas, the primordials won, and the gods were banished. The primordials reinforced the system's crystal sphere, keeping the gods out. Accordingly, Athas is almost entirely cut off from spelljamming, and planar travel is rare.
Background Information[]
Athas is the primary setting for the Dark Sun campaign setting.
